{"id":103,"date":"2015-07-27T13:32:48","date_gmt":"2015-07-27T13:32:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/?p=103"},"modified":"2015-07-27T13:32:48","modified_gmt":"2015-07-27T13:32:48","slug":"analyzing-a-dataset-of-game-releases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/analyzing-a-dataset-of-game-releases\/","title":{"rendered":"Analyzing a Dataset of Game Releases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi, I&#8217;m Rob Lockhart, Creative Director of <a title=\"Important Little Games\" href=\"http:\/\/importantlittlegames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Important Little Games<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;d be grateful if you followed me on <a title=\"bobbylox on twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobbylox\">twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It all started when I stumbled across this misleadingly-titled <a title=\"polygon article about a list of videogames\" href=\"http:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2014\/4\/20\/5633602\/list-of-every-video-game-all-time\" target=\"_blank\">Polygon article<\/a> written last year and followed the link to the <a title=\"plaintext list of videogames\" href=\"http:\/\/pastebin.com\/DG1CsVXk\" target=\"_blank\">data source<\/a> out of curiosity.\u00a0 Basically it&#8217;s just a list of videogame titles, some of which have been annotated with a developer, a year, and\/or a platform.\u00a0 Since I&#8217;m fond of semi-structured data sources, I downloaded the list, which had grown to nearly 150,000 titles since the Polygon article was published, and started to play around in <a title=\"Mathematica\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wolfram.com\/mathematica\/\">Mathematica<\/a>.\u00a0 As you read on, be advised that this is an extremely noisy dataset and does not necessarily reflect the videogames industry&#8217;s history, or even the titles it lists.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I did was take a look at the top words that occur in videogame titles.\u00a0 There were 150,000 game titles and a vocabulary of around 45,000 unique words.\u00a0 About 21,000 of these were used only once in any game title.\u00a0 For scale, consider that <a title=\"economist article about a study of english speakers' vocabulary.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/johnson\/2013\/05\/vocabulary-size\">apparently<\/a> it is not uncommon for a native speaker to have 20,000-35,000 words in their whole vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at the top 50 words I found:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-24-at-11.29.10-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-109 aligncenter\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 11.29.10 PM\" src=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-24-at-11.29.10-PM.png\" width=\"580\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-24-at-11.29.10-PM.png 1548w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-24-at-11.29.10-PM-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-24-at-11.29.10-PM-1024x677.png 1024w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-24-at-11.29.10-PM-120x80.png 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a>There are a lot of words that are completely unsurprising, as they are overwhelmingly frequent throughout English. Numerals, both Arabic and Roman, play a big role, meaning that there are a lot of sequels.\u00a0 Frustrating for those of us who value originality in interactive entertainment, but by no means surprising.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s filter out these uninteresting results and look again:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_116\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.31.21-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116\" class=\" wp-image-116 \" alt=\"I also recombined plurals into the root word.\" src=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.31.21-AM-1024x691.png\" width=\"614\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.31.21-AM-1024x691.png 1024w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.31.21-AM-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.31.21-AM-120x80.png 120w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.31.21-AM.png 1516w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I also recombined plurals into the root word.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In my humble opinion, it really sucks that &#8216;war&#8217; shows up second, after &#8216;game.&#8217;\u00a0 There&#8217;s nothing wrong with war as a theme for any particular game, but our industry&#8217;s singular focus on war and violence becomes pretty tiresome, as this chart exemplifies.\u00a0 Which word would I prefer in second place? &#8216;Magic,&#8217; of course!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~<\/p>\n<p>I also noticed that there were quite a lot of games which use subtitles. Not the written dialogue at the bottom of the cutscenes, but the second part of a title separated by a colon.\u00a0 Things like the underlined part of &#8220;Call of Warfare: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">Modern Videogame<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span>&#8221;\u00a0 Let&#8217;s take a look at the most common subtitles:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.22.45-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-114 aligncenter\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 12.22.45 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.22.45-AM-1024x742.png\" width=\"614\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.22.45-AM-1024x742.png 1024w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.22.45-AM-300x217.png 300w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.22.45-AM.png 1984w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The Game&#8217; and &#8216;Gold Edition&#8217; seem to make sense, but for some reason &#8216;The Movie&#8217; comes in third.\u00a0 Why are there so many games (56) with &#8216;: The Movie&#8217; in the title?!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not very fond of this naming pattern in the first place, but some of these should unquestionably be retired.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s <strong>not<\/strong> name any more games &#8220;Something Something: Vengeance&#8221; shall we?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As I mentioned earlier, some of the entries in the data are tagged with a developer, year, and\/or platform.\u00a0 I found the developers more or less impossible to extract systematically, but I had better luck with years and platforms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">About 1\/5 of the games were tagged with a year, but they were represented unevenly.\u00a0 As you can see below, only the years from 2000 to 2015 had any kind of decent coverage.\u00a0 It&#8217;s interesting to note that within that period, the number of games released per year did not increase or decrease significantly (if this dataset can be taken as a representative sample).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.44.30-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-118 aligncenter\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 12.44.30 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.44.30-AM-1024x664.png\" width=\"614\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.44.30-AM-1024x664.png 1024w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.44.30-AM-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.44.30-AM.png 1734w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If we compile a list of the top ten words for each of these usable years, we might notice some trends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.51.06-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-120 aligncenter\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-07-25 at 12.51.06 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.51.06-AM-1024x385.png\" width=\"614\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.51.06-AM-1024x385.png 1024w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.51.06-AM-300x112.png 300w, https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-2015-07-25-at-12.51.06-AM.png 1594w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a>I think you can kind-of see the zombie craze creeping up in the past few years, as the words &#8216;dark,&#8217; &#8216;night,&#8217; and &#8216;dead&#8217; climb the charts.\u00a0 You can also see where we became obsessed with 3D for a little while.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If we bring back the trivial words we decided to exclude early on, you&#8217;ll see that some games&#8217;
