{"id":405,"date":"2013-11-16T04:40:02","date_gmt":"2013-11-16T10:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/indies-and-edu-games-a-perfect-couple-too-shy-to-approach-one-another\/"},"modified":"2024-12-02T13:31:24","modified_gmt":"2024-12-02T19:31:24","slug":"indies-and-edu-games-a-perfect-couple-too-shy-to-approach-one-another","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/indies-and-edu-games-a-perfect-couple-too-shy-to-approach-one-another\/","title":{"rendered":"Indies and Edu-Games: A Perfect Couple Too Shy to Approach One Another"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>I&#8217;m\u00a0<a title=\"Rob Lockhart's website\" href=\"http:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Lockhart<\/a>, the Creative Director of\u00a0<a title=\"Important Little Games\" href=\"https:\/\/importantlittlegames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Important Little Games<\/a>.\u00a0 If you were to follow me on\u00a0<a title=\"bobbylox on twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobbylox\" target=\"_blank\">twitter<\/a>, I&#8217;d be grateful.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~<\/p>\n<p>Nothing has been more important to my development as a game designer than getting acquainted with the independent game scene in my area, namely <a title=\"Indie City Games\" href=\"http:\/\/indiecitygames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago<\/a>. \u00a0Learning about the ethos and the culture behind the wider indie game scene has only fall in love with it more. \u00a0The tenets of indie game culture are many, but there&#8217;s something I want to try to explore in connection with the specific genre I&#8217;m engaged with at the moment: &#8216;Make Something Original.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Make Something Original&#8217; is, I think, the most valuable thing that Indies can offer. \u00a0While big-budget games can have original elements, I think it&#8217;s safe to say that AAA game developers are unwilling to risk wholly original games. \u00a0In contrast, independent game developers are willing and eager to create whole new genres, some of which <a title=\"Not Games\" href=\"http:\/\/notgames.org\/blog\/2010\/03\/19\/not-a-manifesto\/\" target=\"_blank\">stretch the entire definition of games<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Running parallel to Independent games is a new renaissance in educational games, lead by academic institutions like <a title=\"GLS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gameslearningsociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Games*Learning*Society<\/a> and the <a title=\"Center for Games &amp; Impact\" href=\"http:\/\/gamesandimpact.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Games and Impact<\/a>\u00a0, medium-sized game studios like <a title=\"Filament\" href=\"http:\/\/www.filamentgames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Filament Games<\/a> and <a title=\"E-Line Media\" href=\"http:\/\/elinemedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">E-Line Media<\/a>\u00a0and non-profits like the <a title=\"Institute of Play\" href=\"http:\/\/www.instituteofplay.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Institute of Play<\/a>. \u00a0These groups are proving the efficacy of games for learning every day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_218\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Filament.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-218\" class=\"size-full wp-image-218 \" alt=\"One of my favorite Filament games\" src=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Filament.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of my favorite Filament games<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Why Learning Games and Indies are Such a Good Match<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I grow to appreciate more and more, games for learning require a flexible approach to game design. \u00a0There is room for games at three stages of the learning process:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Need to Know. \u00a0This is the stage where a student is motivated to learn something. \u00a0For example, having students play a few rounds of Cannons (or <a title=\"Worms\" href=\"http:\/\/www.team17.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Worms<\/a>, or <a title=\"Angry Birds\" href=\"http:\/\/www.angrybirds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Angry Birds<\/a>) might motivate them to learn ballistics formulas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Content or Skills. \u00a0This is what most people think of when they think of learning. \u00a0All modern well-designed games teach the player the skills and knowledge necessary to play as part of the initial play experience. \u00a0A few make this play experience about something with real-world analogs, and thus teach real-world skills or content as a side-effect of play. \u00a0For example, <a title=\"Do I Have A Right\" href=\"http:\/\/www.icivics.org\/games\/do-i-have-right\" target=\"_blank\">this game about running a constitutional law firm<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Assessment. Most educational games are actually in this category (though they may claim to be in category 2). \u00a0Examples are <a title=\"Math Blaster\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mathblaster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Math Blaster<\/a> and <a title=\"Mandarin Madness\" href=\"http:\/\/mandarinmadness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mandarin Madness<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At their best, learning games are capable of covering all of these phases simultaneously, but that requires an openness to letting the subject matter and game mechanics influence and inform one another. \u00a0As <a title=\"Scot Osterweil\" href=\"http:\/\/education.mit.edu\/people\/scot-osterweil\" target=\"_blank\">Scot Osterweil<\/a> once put it to me (I paraphrase), &#8216;the designer must find within the topic what is playful and let that be the kernel the game is built around.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>When risk-averse organizations attempt to design games for learning, what results is often a proven game mechanic (such as Mario-style platforming) paired arbitrarily with a learning goal (like diabetes management &#8211; <a title=\"Packy &amp; Marlon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=oWcPf_n8BgM\" target=\"_blank\">this is a real game<\/a>). \u00a0When indies experiment with educational game design, the results are not always polished, but are usually at least cohesive.<\/p>\n<p>There is already a lot of crossover, in terms of personnel. \u00a0Some of the most innovative independent designers have already dipped their toes in the water of educational games, perhaps recognizing the usefulness of the independent design philosophy to pedagogy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the top of the list is <a title=\"Eric Zimmerman\" href=\"http:\/\/ericzimmerman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Zimmerman<\/a>, a games educator as well as maker of educational games. \u00a0The studio he founded, <a title=\"Gamelab\" href=\"http:\/\/ericzimmerman.com\/portfolio\/gamelab\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gamelab<\/a>\u00a0(no longer operating, but still influential), worked on several educational games for Lego, and, with <a title=\"Katie Salen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdm.depaul.edu\/people\/pages\/facultyinfo.aspx?fid=1037\" target=\"_blank\">Katie Salen<\/a>&#8216;s leadership, eventually spun off both the Institute of Play and <a title=\"Gamestar Mechanic\" href=\"http:\/\/gamestarmechanic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gamestar Mechanic<\/a>, a game that teaches game design.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Jesse Schell\" href=\"http:\/\/jesseschell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jesse Schell<\/a>, who wrote the touchstone book &#8220;The Art of Game Design,&#8221; has been known to create educational games. \u00a0Most of his company&#8217;s work is for-hire, but <a title=\"Schell Games\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schellgames.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Schell Games<\/a> has developed a name for itself when it comes to creating learning experiences, especially for children. \u00a0As a former Disney Imagineer, Schell seems to have a gift for inspiring childlike wonder.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Robin Hunicke\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robin_Hunicke\" target=\"_blank\">Robin Hunicke<\/a>, famous for Sims 2 and the dearly departed <a title=\"Glitch\" href=\"http:\/\/www.glitchthegame.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glitch<\/a>, recently started a new studio, in part to create transformative games: <a title=\"Funomena\" href=\"http:\/\/www.funomena.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Funomena<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Steve Swink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.steveswink.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Swink<\/a>, who you may know from his current project <a title=\"Steve Swink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1188957169\/scale\" target=\"_blank\">SCALE<\/a>, was\u00a0lead designer of <a title=\"Atlantis Remixed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atlantisremixed.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Atlantis Remixed<\/a> (a literacy game for high school kids at Arizona State University).<\/li>\n<li>John Murphy is 1\/8th of the team behind <a title=\"Octodad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.octodadgame.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Octodad<\/a>. \u00a0He also has another job, as game designer at <a title=\"Chicago Quest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagoquest.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Quest<\/a>, a middle school with a mission to implement game-like learning throughout their curriculum.<\/li>\n<li>There was also a familiar name announced as a nominee for Most Significant Impact at the Games for Change festival. \u00a0<a title=\"Lucas Pope\" href=\"http:\/\/dukope.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lucas Pope<\/a>\u00a0who has recently gained notoriety for the game &#8216;Papers, Please&#8217; was nominated for an earlier game &#8216;Republica Times,&#8217; which is about the ethics of journalism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_219\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/oregon-trail-deluxe_7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219\" class=\"size-full wp-image-219\" alt=\"If only digital bison were as plentiful now as they were in the 1990s.  Sigh.\" src=\"https:\/\/bobbylox.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/oregon-trail-deluxe_7.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"481\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">If only digital bison were as plentiful now as they were in the 1990s. Sigh.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s Holding Indies Back from creating Educational Games?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, a small criticism of the indie scene I love so dearly: there is a significant slice of our community who create games primarily in order to recapture the glory of the games of their childhood. \u00a0That is to say, they want to be the triple-A developers of the early 90s. \u00a0This is fine on its own, but it&#8217;s not the most fertile ground for potential crossover between indies and eddies (as I hereby dub educational game developers).<\/p>\n<p>This brings up the topic of history. \u00a0Educational games had a golden age in the early 90s with games like <a title=\"Carmen Sandiego\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carmensandiego.com\/hmh\/site\/carmen\/\" target=\"_blank\">Carmen Sandiego<\/a>, <a title=\"Oregon Trail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oregontrail.com\/hmh\/site\/oregontrail\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oregon Trail<\/a>, and <a title=\"Sim City\" href=\"http:\/\/www.simcity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sim City<\/a>\u00a0(all of which have become ongoing franchises). \u00a0Shortly after, there was an explosion of content in the category called &#8216;Edutainment.&#8217; \u00a0Edutainment was, by and large, a series of ineffective, boring tarted-up flash-card systems which have given educational technology a stigma that we are only now starting to overcome. \u00a0It is partly the fear of returning to this state that led me to write <a title=\"Games are not Silicon Valley\" href=\"http:\/\/gamasutra.com\/blogs\/RobLockhart\/20131014\/202310\/Games_Are_Not_Startups.php#comment220327\" target=\"_blank\">this rant on Gamasutra<\/a>. \u00a0It is this fear that may be holding back other indies from designing games for education.<\/p>\n<p>The idea that pedagogical theory is a rigorous and difficult discipline might be another barrier. \u00a0There is some truth to this supposition &#8212;
